achieve·ment (as defined on merriam-webster.com)
: something that has been done or achieved through effort : a result of hard work
: the act of achieving something : the state or condition of having achieved or accomplished something
ACHIEVEMENT is not what you start – it is what you finish.
So if you are the type to start and not finish – break that habit. You are robbing yourself of one of your greatest needs.
It is my belief that mankind has a life-need of altruism and achievement. Some people need altruism more than achievement, or achievement more than altruism. But one of these two acts of giving or winning must be in order to feel a fulfilling life.
Strangely, many Americans no longer understand hard work – though our grandparents did, and the generations before them also did.
: using a lot of time and energy to do work
Some of us have chosen no longer to attend college. It is too expensive, we can’t work and go to school. Or we have other priorities. College would serve as a reflection of our willingness to do hard work. So without college, what is the testament of our worth? What will we accomplish? What will we finish? Is life worthwhile spent working a low skilled job for a low wage?
I do not think so.
I champion business. Business is the opportunity to solve a great problem, to fill a great need or desire and to enrich and better the lives of many, many people. In business, great people can show their worth- both with and without a degree. In business, the poorest person can build a great system, champion a great idea and become very wealthy.
Yet, so many start a business with the whimsical intent to be successful, yet they forget- to achieve, you must finish.
You must do what the customer needs you to do, or not promise that. You must file your paperwork correctly and keep good track of your money. You must continue to win new customers, as well as find new ways to serve your current ones. You must understand your competition, and be different and better than they are.
You must have a plan, when you can no longer run your company for reasons of illness, financial devastation, changes in the market and death.
You must stay focused to achieve success, or you will fail along with so many are failing right now.
ACHIEVEMENT is not what you start – it is what you finish.
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” ~Anatole France
I ask the hard questions from time to time — this is one of those times.
I meet people often, that claim that they want to make a certain dream reality. You, reading this, might be one of those people that I am referring to. You have this brilliant idea, I mean it is a really good idea. You start working on it…. then you get this other, also great idea – and you start working on that too.
Where is your focus?
This isn’t meant to cut you down – it is meant to build you up.
It is that simple, but not that easy. What you have to do in order to be a success is FOCUS.
Do not start a million projects, and never finish anything. Do not make excuses. Do not give up, unless it is really time.
Focus. Focus on one prime thing.
My one thing is Your Business Allies. There are things on the side – life adds projects. But most of the time, my mind is working on how can I grow businesses in Jacksonville? How can I help the careers of talented individuals?
Sometimes those side projects eat away the valuable time and I have to have that moment of re-focus.
Refocus is one of the most important aspects of your life. Refocus is that little nudge to the steeling wheel that prevents a head-on collision.
So ask yourself often, am I doing the most valuable work? Am I focused on my ultimate goal? Is what I am doing going to take me where I want to be?
Then trim the waste. I realized that I was spending three hours + per day playing Tetris. Five minutes here and there really added up. Then, even after realizing that I was loosing so much time, it lead to playing other mindless games. To nip it in the butt, I first deleted all of my game apps off of my phone and Facebook. I then found more productive things to do with the times that I felt the urge to play Tetris. It felt so good to re-apply that time!
Refocus, Reform, Replace.
Refocus on your goal.
Reform your planned time to do your most valuable work by-
Replacing your wasted time with more productive efforts.
So, do you really want to make your dreams come true? If so, stay focused on your greatest work!
Today is the day where I look myself in the mirror, and ask “Am I good enough for my dreams?” I dream big, and I work hard, but I am seeing a trend that I want to bring to a screeching halt. It is a trend of doing a lot, but not doing enough of the right things. Working very hard, and yet being lazy about the things that matter most!
This is a post of self-criticism that I hope you can take for yourself, and become a greater business person – as it has made me greater.
What are the right things to be doing? What is your most valuable work? These are the questions you need to constantly be asking yourself. This is a very important part of staying focused. It is easy to get lost answering all the email, and getting creative with your social media. But in reality, the most important work will bring great value to your customers, and work toward fulfilling your mission.
My MISSION: Your Business Allies is committed to growing small businesses and the careers of talented individuals in the city of Jacksonville, by giving valuable advice, ground-breaking ideas and organizing and executing actions toward their goals.
So I have to ask myself, what am I doing for the small businesses and talented individuals in Jacksonville?? Am I doing all that I possibly can to make them successful?
And since that answer is definitely NO, the next question is: What can I do RIGHT NOW to help those that it is my MISSION to help?
Now this is a powerful way to re-focus and re-prioritize.
I could ask myself with every task, what will this do to help my customers and help fulfill my mission? Am I wasting my time?
I leave you with a few quotes that really resonated with me on this subject:
“You can’t make footprints in the sands of time by sitting on your butt. And who wants to leave buttprints in the sands of time?”
― Bob Moawad
“Didn’t they realize that the only way to change things was to act?”
― Tamora Pierce
